Music & recording residency in Burgundy
Foray's music residency gives composers, songwriters, bands and producers a residential recording studio in the Burgundy countryside, 1h15 from Paris by train. You live on site in a private room over the valley and work in a studio built around a control room running a UAD Apollo 8 rack, with outboard effects, an acoustic piano, a drum room and a vocal booth.
Stays run from a few days to several months, all year round, with breakfast and dinner at the shared table.

The studio
Foray's founder, the composer Jamie Turner, packed up his California studio, and months later it arrived in Burgundy.
It's designed as a space to be playful and exploratory with what you record: not to feel the constraint of time, but to compose in real time, surrounded by interesting things to try. A simple set-up that encourages exploration in the writing and recording process.
Between sessions, the house keeps the music going: a Music bedroom with a Thorens turntable and a changing selection of vinyl, a grand piano in the hall, and evenings that sometimes turn into concerts.

The studio has scored the Venice Film Festival–winning film Emperor alongside the cellist Gaspar Claus, recorded director Ilan Cohen's latest short film, and hosted InFiné signing Felix Antonio.

Every residency includes
- A large private room with a double bed, wardrobe, desk and private bathroom with a bath, overlooking the garden or the Yonne valley
- Access to all 230 m² of studios and to every space in the house
- Breakfast, local and mostly plant-based

Fees & funding
Most residencies at Foray are not grant-funded, so the artist covers the logistics of their stay. Since 2025, the guesthouse side of Foray has part-funded the residencies, which keeps those costs greatly reduced.
The cost depends on the programme and the length of your stay: the longer you stay, the lower the daily cost. It also depends on how much care you need, for example if you'd like lunches cooked for you.
We're happy to help you apply for a grant or other third-party funding, with advice and documentation, and we're open to organising a workshop, show or event on site to help finance your stay.

Questions artists ask
Is there a recording studio I can use during a residency?
Yes. Studio time is part of the music residency: a control room running a UAD Apollo 8 rack, outboard effects, an acoustic piano, a drum room and a vocal booth. Ask us for the full equipment list.
Is a sound engineer available?
It can be arranged. Tell us what you need when you apply and we'll talk it through; it's reflected in the cost of the residency.
Can a band stay and record together?
Yes. Foray has five bedrooms and can be booked as a whole house, so a band can live and record under one roof. Tell us how many of you there are and how long you'd like to stay.
How do I get there with my instruments?
By car, Foray is 10 minutes from exit 18 of the A6, with parking in front of the house, and we'll help you carry gear in. By train, it's 1h15 from Paris to Joigny.
Can I play a concert at the end of my residency?
Often, yes. We're open to organising a show or event on site, and it can help finance your stay. Mention it when you apply.
