Visual arts residency in Burgundy: painting, wood & metal
Foray's visual arts residency is for painters, sculptors, printmakers and mixed-media artists who need space, tools and materials. Within 230 m² of studios there's a painting studio and a large wood & metal workshop, with indoor and outdoor space to work on large or small pieces without worrying about making a mess.
We help source the materials you need locally. You live on site in a private room, 1h15 from Paris by train, with breakfast and dinner at the shared table.

Studios and workshop
When you need space (indoors or outdoors), tools or materials to bring an idea into existence, Foray has them or sources them locally. Whether it's a giant stone to lithograph onto, or a mop to make a giant calligraphy piece, we've helped with these things and more.
The workshop is large: work on big or small pieces without worrying about making a mess. Tools, raw materials and help sourcing specific materials locally are all there to give free rein to your imagination and your manual creativity.
Residencies are open to organising experimental workshops, open studios and performances, showing your work to the house, the guests and the village.

Every residency includes
- A large private room with a double bed, wardrobe, desk and private bathroom with a bath, overlooking the garden or the Yonne valley
- Access to all 230 m² of studios and to every space in the house
- Breakfast, local and mostly plant-based
- Dinner at the shared vegetarian table, pay what you can
- The spacious communal kitchen, for self-catered lunches

Fees & funding
Most residencies at Foray are not grant-funded, so the artist covers the logistics of their stay. Since 2025, the guesthouse side of Foray has part-funded the residencies, which keeps those costs greatly reduced.
The cost depends on the programme and the length of your stay: the longer you stay, the lower the daily cost. It also depends on how much care you need, for example if you'd like lunches cooked for you.
We're happy to help you apply for a grant or other third-party funding, with advice and documentation, and we're open to organising a workshop, show or event on site to help finance your stay.

Questions artists ask
What tools and materials are available?
A painting studio and a large wood & metal workshop with tools and raw materials. If you need something specific, we help source it locally. Ask us for the tool list when you apply.
Can I work on large pieces or outdoors?
Yes. The workshop is made for big or messy work, the Grand Hall is 200 m², and there are ten acres of garden between the river and the forest.
Can I show my work at the end of the residency?
Yes, we're open to organising an open studio, a workshop or a show on site, and it can help finance your stay.
Is it only for painters?
No. Painters and digital artists have worked here alongside musicians, writers and dancers, and every medium is welcome, from printmaking to sculpture to installation.
